Our programs are designed for the specific needs of the African American (Black and People of Color) Transgender/GNC/Non-Binary/ LGBTQ+ community but our doors are open to all people who are struggling with homelessness or may require other public health services.
— Our Story
Kennedy and Mya, a married couple with two children, Carson and Mason. Kennedy and Mya were born and raised in the Washington, DC area. Between the two, Kennedy and Mya have been doing THE WORK for 20-plus years. There were once a time in their lives where they had very little to survive yet they found a way to get their peers off the streets and into their small home which allowed one more person to have a safe place to rest and have a hot meal. Mya has been assisting people find jobs, preparing resumes, driving them to the job interviews, and providing dozens of connections and resources that assist in the growth of development in many communities. In addition to Mya’s great work, Kennedy has been preparing meals, making clothing, donating his personal clothing and accessories, and counseling the LGBTQIA community and other marginalized groups. For over 20 years, Kennedy and Mya have been passionate advocates for homelessness and for the LGBTQIA community and other marginalized groups. They have accomplished this by assisting people with finding jobs, locating stable housing, educating people on protecting themselves with condom use and/or PREP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), and educating on the importance of staying away from drugs and alcohol.
Kennedy and Mya recently moved to a rural area in Virginia and while getting settled, Kennedy and Mya began to look around for LGBTQIA centers or resources and to their surprise there were NONE. No doctors, No shelters, No community, Nothing. Kennedy and Mya noticed that people were forced to travel to Washington, DC for any safe and comfortable place that serviced the LGBTQ community. During their travels throughout the town and neighboring towns they noticed a huge LGBT presence. They said to one another, “wow, I am surprised that they do not have any organizations in the area that support’s the LGBTQ community.” Mya made a joke to Kennedy and said, “well, I will open up shop.”
That joke became a vision and that vision became a mission and that mission has become a new and exciting reality.
